BI Tutorial – Design of Graphs

How to format graphs in PowerBI:

  • Create a graph title
  • Update the colour in graphs
  • Fix or format graphs

Create the graphs

Load your tables onto PowerBI and create the graphs/charts.

Format the graph

Select the graph to work on then select Format visual under Visualizations. For this example, the pie graph was selected first.

Pie chart colours

To change the colours of the pie chart, click on the Slices and under the Colors section update the colours. In this instance, red represents females, males are in blue and the x is in purple.

Pie chart title

To change the title of the pie chart, select General > Title > type in the title under the Text box.

Pie chart legend title

For the pie chart, the title of the legend can be updated by clicking back to Visual > Legend > under the Title, Title text section enter the text.

Bar chart design

On the bar chart, follow the steps to change the name of the Y-axis, the colour of the values and the range of the graph.

  1. Click on the graph
  2. Select Visualization > Format visual
  3. Under Visual > select the Y-axis then Range, Values, and Title. There you will be able to change the title of the axis, the range, and the colour of values.

Other effects

Other changes can be made such as Background colour by navigating to Effects. To change the Size, Position and Padding navigate to the Properties.
