BI Tutorial – Demographics of your Learners

Before you begin:

Required Knowledge: Getting Started with PowerBI

Use PowerBI with your data to create meaningful and easy-to-understand charts or graphs about Learner demographics.

1

  1. Launch the PowerBI App.
  2. Load data tables such as ID, Age, Gender and Country of birth

2a

Pie chart for Learner genders

Under the Build visual section select the Pie chart icon.

2b

Add data to the pie chart

Click a checkbox to select a column, OR drag columns into the pie chart.

In this example, the clientid and gendercode have been selected.

2c

Remove meaningless data

In this example, the graph contains blank and @ fields which are meaningless.

To remove these:

  1. Navigate to the Filters tab
  2. Click on gendercode
  3. Only select the meaningful fields.

3a

Learner age bar chart

  1. Navigate to the Visualizations action
  2. Select the Clustered column chart
  3. From the Data section select the age and clientid.

  2. Ensure the age is on the x-axis

4a

Learner birth country map

Create a map to display the places where your Learners were born.

  1. Select the map option from the Visualizations
  2. Select countryofbirth from the Data

4b

Learner birth country concentration

To add the Learner concentration to the map:

  1. Add the Count of learnerid to the Bubble size

The map now shows where the majority of the Learners were born.

5

Graph interactions

All of these graphs interact with each other. To see just the results for females, select the females on the pie graph.  The bar chart will highlight females and the map will only show the female results. You can also see age demographics to classify what gender they are and what country they were born in, or see the age and gender breakdown for the students that are from Australia.
