As part of our upcoming Unit Offer Unification release in Mid June 2026, Unit Groups will be retired from Wisenet.
This change is part of a broader improvement to simplify how units, enrolments, and delivery structures are managed across the platform. The new model is designed to provide greater flexibility, reduce duplication, and support more consistent long-term management of course delivery.
What’s changing
With Unit Offer Unification:
- Unit Offers will no longer be tied to a single Course Offer
- A single Unit Offer can now be shared across multiple Course Offers
- Grouping and hierarchy will be managed using parent–child relationships directly between Unit Offers
- Enrolment, delivery, and management processes will occur at the Unit Offer level
Because of these improvements, separate Unit Group entities will no longer be required and will be retired as part of the release.
For customers currently using Unit Groups, this means existing group structures will need to be reviewed and reconfigured using the new Unit Offer hierarchy model.
Why Unit Groups are not being migrated
After careful consideration, we have decided not to automatically migrate Unit Groups into the new structure. While it may seem possible to convert Unit Groups into Units or parent Unit Offers, doing so would create poor quality and difficult to maintain data structures over time.
Unit Groups have historically been used differently across customers and do not contain enough consistent structure to migrate automatically into the new model. An automatic migration would require Wisenet to create artificial Units, unnecessary hierarchy, and duplicated relationships that may not accurately reflect your intended delivery structure.
Rather than forcing a migration that could create messy data, we are choosing a cleaner transition approach that protects the long-term quality, flexibility, and maintainability of your environment.
What this means for customers currently using Unit Groups
If you currently use Unit Groups, we recommend reviewing how those structures are being used today and planning how you would like to represent grouping or hierarchy using the new Unit Offer parent-child relationships.
Your existing Units and Unit Offers will remain in place. Only the Unit Group layer itself will be retired.
To support your transition, we will provide:
- detailed Learn resources
- recommended structure examples
- workflow guidance and FAQs
- webinar walkthroughs and demonstrations
- planning support for more complex configurations
These resources are intended to help you move to the new structure in a clear and manageable way while taking advantage of the increased flexibility offered by Unit Offer Unification.
Looking ahead
This change represents an important step towards a more flexible and scalable delivery model within Wisenet.
Our goal is to improve consistency and simplify long-term management, while giving customers more control over how units are structured and delivered across courses.
We understand that changes to academic structure require planning and care, and we are committed to supporting you throughout the transition.
FAQs
1. Can I retain my existing Unit Group structure, and will Unit Groups be migrated into parent and child Unit Offers?
No. Existing Unit Groups will not be migrated into parent and child Unit Offers.
After reviewing how Unit Groups are commonly used across customers, we found that many Unit Groups were primarily being used as a way to organise or label related Units, rather than representing a true academic or delivery hierarchy.
Automatically converting these into Units and hierarchical Unit Offers would often create:
- Artificial or unnecessary structure
- Additional Units that don’t serve a real delivery purpose
- More complex and harder to maintain course configurations over time
For many customers, recreating Unit Groups as formal Unit hierarchies would add complexity without providing meaningful benefit.
Instead, the new model gives customers more flexibility in how grouping and structure are represented moving forward.
Depending on your use case, grouping can often be achieved more cleanly through:
- Parent–child relationships between Unit Offers where hierarchy is genuinely needed
- Naming conventions
- Tags or custom fields
- Shared Unit Offers across multiple Course Offers
This approach avoids forcing unnecessary structure into your environment and supports cleaner, more maintainable configurations long term.
2. What are my options when Unit Groups are retired?
The best approach will depend on how you currently use Unit Groups today.
Option A – You decide that you no longer require Unit Groups
If the grouping itself is no longer required, you may not need to recreate this structure at all.
In these cases, little or no action may be required beyond reviewing your existing setup after release.
Option B – You want to categorise or label related Unit Offers
If you use Unit Groups mainly to organise or classify related Units, a formal hierarchy may not be necessary.
Depending on your workflow, this may be better managed using:
- Stages
- Custom fields
- Naming conventions (Note: We will be introducing a new Unit Offer Description field with this release)
- Shared Unit Offers across Course Offers
This approach can often provide a simpler and more maintainable structure moving forward.
Option C – You want a true hierarchy in your Unit Offer structure
If your setup genuinely requires hierarchical delivery relationships, these can now be managed directly through parent-child Unit Offer relationships.
Because each organisation’s structure can differ significantly, we recommend working with Wisenet to design the most appropriate approach for your environment.
For customers with more complex setups, we can provide planning guidance and structure recommendations ahead of release.
3. When will this change be released?
The release is currently scheduled for Mid June 2026.
If you are currently using Unit Groups, we recommend beginning planning and reviewing your existing structures ahead of release to help ensure a smooth transition.
4. Will I lose my Unit Group data, and will there be a way to export it?
Unit Groups will be retired and will not exist in the new structure.
However:
- Your underlying Units and Unit Offers will remain
- Only the grouping layer (Unit Groups) will be removed
To support your transition:
- You can generate report #0441 to download your current Unit Group structures, including:
- Group names
- Associated Unit Offers
This can be used as a reference when rebuilding your structure in the new model.
