From 1 July 2026, new Australian regulations will require organisations to register any business name used as an SMS Sender ID (‘From Name’).
If your learners currently receive SMS messages that display your organisation name, you will need to take action to continue using this as your sender name.
What’s changing?
The new regulations are designed to reduce SMS impersonation and scam activity by ensuring organisations are authorised to use the sender names displayed in SMS messages.
As part of these changes, organisations that want to continue using a custom SMS Sender ID (‘From Name’) must register that Sender ID and complete the required verification process.
If you choose not to register your Sender ID, learners will no longer see your organisation’s name as the sender and may see different sender numbers each time.
Unregistered Sender IDs will no longer be supported by Australian mobile networks from 1 July 2026.
What you need to do
Organisations that wish to continue displaying their business name as the sender of SMS messages will need to create and maintain an account with our SMS partner, MessageMedia.
To prepare for the compliance deadline of 1 July, customers who want to continue using a custom Sender ID need to:
- Review your SMS usage. To do this:
- Run the 0937 SMS Message Summary report in Wisenet.
- Filter the report using LastAuditTimestamp for the current year.
- Review the monthly SMS counts to understand your typical sending volume.
- Select an appropriate MessageMedia plan, and create a MessageMedia account.
- Register your Sender ID (‘From Name’) with MessageMedia. Before this can be approved, your organisation’s Authorised Business Representative (the person responsible for your ABN) must complete the ACMA Assist setup process. Read more about this process.
- Connect their MessageMedia account to Wisenet once the new integration process becomes available.
Once you’ve completed this preparation, you can finalise the integration with Option 2 from the SMS Messaging guide on our Learn site.
Prepare for the changes
We encourage organisations that plan to continue using a custom Sender ID to begin preparing now to allow sufficient time for account creation, verification, and approval before 1 July 2026.
We understand that regulatory changes can require additional planning and preparation. Our team is working closely with MessageMedia to ensure a smooth transition and will provide further updates as the new integration process becomes available.
